The Continued Voyages of The Princess Matilda

After circumnavigating the UK in 2012 - we crossed the Channel. The skipper had it in mind to go to the Baltic, we took our time, and we wintered Princess Matilda in Ostend, Belgium, Helleovoetsluis, Holland, Harburg in Germany and finally Malmo in Sweden.

The Baltic winters are pretty brutal, we had ice hanging off the lines but Princess Matilda didn’t let us down, she is well insulated and we survived. In 2016 we had her lifted out of the water and she was returned to the UK on a low loader - she now resides in Kent. CPL Transport, Appledore, Kent did this for us. (www.cpltrans.com)

Our route to the Baltic was as follows:

Coast of France, Belgium and Holland. We used many inland routes through Holland via the Oosterschelde (there is infinite choices) to Amsterdam then used the Markermeer and IJsselmeer and into the Waddenzee to Texel, doubling back to the inland water ways to get into Germany. Again there are endless routes but eventually we ended up Travemunde the gateway to the Baltic. That summer we discovered Denmark, one of the highlights, besides passing the famous Mermaid was mooring close to the Amalienborg Palace, the home of the Royal family in Copenhagen. But another ‘royal palace’ beckoned us, Helsingør immortalised by Shakespeare as Elsinore, the home of Hamlet.

We went beneath the famous Øresund Bridge, that links Denmark and Sweden several times. Malmo was our final mooring before the early onset of winter.

* Helsingor was the futherthest north we traveled before heading back south to Øresund Sound that separates Denmark and Sweden.

* Helsingør 56° 02' 5.00" N
12° 36' 40.00" E

Best wishes Shane Spall
